Christmas carols AV terms explained
Common terms you will hear when planning a school Christmas carols night, explained simply.
Battery PA
A portable PA system powered by an internal rechargeable battery rather than mains power. Essential for outdoor carols on ovals, in remote performance points or at any venue without convenient power access.
Choir microphone
An overhead condenser microphone positioned above the choir to capture the whole group cleanly. Different to handheld or lapel mics which only pick up one voice. Often used in pairs for stereo coverage.
Wireless microphone
A microphone that transmits via radio frequency to a receiver. No cables to manage on stage. Standard for the principal, MC, student readers and soloists during carols nights.
Stage wash
Lighting that covers the full performance area in even colour. For carols, warm amber or soft white wash creates the right atmosphere without harsh shadows or spotlight pools.
Front of house
The PA system and mix position facing the audience. The operator sits at “front of house” and controls the sound the audience hears during the carols night, blending speech, choir and music.
Bump in
The setup phase before a show, when equipment is brought in, rigged and tested. Bump out is the reverse, packing everything down after the final song.
Day rehearsal
The afternoon rehearsal on the same day as the concert. Lets the choir, soloists and speakers practice with the actual sound and lighting before the audience arrives. Greatly improves the final performance.
Scene recall
A feature on digital mixers that saves the sound settings dialled in during rehearsal and recalls them exactly for the concert. Means the night sound matches what was set up earlier.

Christmas carols nights run almost exclusively in December. Here is when to lock in your date and what to plan for.

November. Most dates still open but Friday nights in early December book first. Lock in soon to avoid disappointment.
