Outdoor PA that works in the open air
Outdoor sound is a different challenge to indoor. Wind, distance and ambient noise all work against clarity. Here is how we handle it.
Four 100V Speaker Towers
Four speaker towers, each with two horn speakers, linked by a single 100V speaker cable that we run and tape down. Spread around the oval, they cover the spectator and event areas evenly. Powered from mains, or a generator if the oval has none.
Wireless Announcer Mic
Professional wireless handheld microphone for the announcer. Long range transmission so the announcer can move around the results table and finish line area without losing signal. Processed for outdoor clarity.
Music Playback
High quality music playback from USB, phone or laptop. Our operator manages the volume and fades the music out cleanly for each announcement. School-curated playlists, Spotify and USB drives all work.
Outdoor Speaker Positioning
Speaker placement for outdoor events is critical. We position speakers to cover the spectator area and announcement zone without wasting output in open air. Angled down toward the audience rather than firing into open sky.
Mixing and Processing
Dedicated EQ and processing for outdoor speech clarity. The mid-range frequencies that carry speech intelligibility are prioritised. Wind noise suppression applied to the wireless mic to keep announcements clear even on a breezy day.
Backup Power
Spare batteries for the wireless microphone and a power backup on every full day carnival. If the oval has no mains, we bring a generator, so there is no risk of the PA going quiet before the final event.
Outdoor sound is not the same as indoor sound
An indoor PA bounces sound off walls and ceilings, filling the room with reflected sound. Outdoor PA has none of this. The sound leaves the speaker and dissipates in open air. To cover a large oval effectively, the PA needs to be more powerful and the speakers need to be aimed correctly, down at the audience rather than horizontally into the distance.
Wind is the other factor. Even a light Perth breeze in Term 1 can make a microphone sound muddy. We apply wind suppression processing to the wireless mic and recommend the announcer hold the mic close when the wind picks up. Simple and effective.
Finally, school ovals often have no convenient power point. We handle that by running the towers from the nearest mains point, or by bringing a generator when there is none. The speaker cable between the towers is run along the edge and taped down, so there is nothing for students to trip over. It is a setup built for almost every school athletics carnival in Perth.

Sports carnival PA terms explained
Common sound terms for school sports carnivals, explained simply.
100V speaker tower
A passive speaker on a tall stand, driven over a 100V line so several towers can be linked on one cable run. We use four towers, each with two horn speakers, spread around the oval and powered from mains or a generator. The horns are efficient and built for clear speech outdoors.
Wireless microphone
A microphone that transmits via radio frequency to a receiver connected to the PA. No cable between the announcer and the PA unit. Allows the announcer to move around the results table and finish line area freely. Range is typically 50 to 100 metres outdoors.
Outdoor throw
How far a PA speaker can project sound clearly outdoors. Outdoor throw is significantly shorter than indoor range because there are no walls to reflect the sound. A speaker that fills a school hall may only cover half an oval when used outside without the right placement.
Wind handling
Electronic processing applied to a microphone signal to reduce the low frequency noise caused by wind moving across the capsule. Without wind handling, a breezy day creates a loud rumble through the PA that masks the announcer’s voice.
Speech intelligibility
How clearly words can be understood from a PA system. For a carnival PA, intelligibility is more important than loudness. A clear announcement at moderate volume is more useful than a loud but muddy one. Achieved through correct EQ, speaker placement and microphone technique.
Music duck
Automatically or manually lowering the music volume when an announcement is made. Our operator ducks the music before every announcement so the results call is heard clearly and the music comes back up immediately after. Simple but important for a professional carnival broadcast.
Poolside acoustics
The acoustic environment at a swimming pool, typically very reverberant due to hard concrete surfaces, water and a large enclosed or semi-enclosed space. Requires different microphone processing and speaker positioning compared to an open oval.
Bump in
The setup phase before an event, when equipment is brought in, positioned and tested. For a carnival, bump in happens before the first event of the day. The operator arrives early enough to set up, test the wireless mic with the announcer and confirm the music playback before students arrive.
