What is pixel pitch on an LED wall?
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centre of one LED pixel and the next. A smaller pitch (say 2.6mm) packs in more pixels for a sharper, higher-resolution image, while a larger pitch (like 6mm or more) is coarser but usually cheaper per square metre. As a rule of thumb the pitch number tells you how close people can comfortably stand: the smaller the pitch, the closer the audience can be before they start seeing individual pixels.
How far should the audience be from an LED wall?
A handy convention is that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres roughly matches the pixel pitch in millimetres, so a 3.9mm wall reads cleanly from about 4 metres back, and a 2.5mm wall from about 2.5 metres. Closer than that and the gaps between pixels start to show, especially on fine text and faces. For a stage backdrop where everyone is seated well back, a larger pitch is usually fine and more economical.
How do I work out the resolution of an LED wall?
Resolution comes from the physical size of each panel divided by the pixel pitch, then multiplied by how many panels you tile across and up. For example a 500mm panel at 3.9mm pitch is about 128 pixels per panel edge, so a 6 by 4 grid lands near 768 by 512 pixels. Knowing the final pixel count matters because your video processor and content need to be mapped to that exact canvas.
What size LED wall do I need for my event?
Work backwards from the room: pick a width and height that fit the stage and sightlines, then divide by your panel size (commonly 500mm) to get the number of panels across and up. As a starting point a wall a couple of metres tall reads well for a conference or gala backdrop, while a larger wall suits concerts and festivals where the back of the crowd is far away. Always check the finished height clears the stage and any trussing, and confirm the rigging or ground-support can carry the load.
Should I choose an LED wall or a projector and screen?
LED walls hold up in bright rooms and outdoors because they emit their own light, so they beat projection where you cannot dim the space. Projection is often more cost-effective for very large images in a controllable, darker room such as a theatre or ballroom. The decision usually comes down to ambient light, budget and the image size you need, so it is worth comparing both for your specific venue.
