Dance Floor Size.

A common planning rule is about 0.4 m² (roughly a 63 x 63 cm square) of floor per person actually dancing, which gives each dancer room to move without bumping shoulders. You don't size for every guest though, because not everyone dances at once. As a rough guide, assume around 30 to 40 per cent of your guests are on the floor at the busiest moment, then multiply that number of dancers by 0.4 m² to get the area.

For most weddings and parties, plan for roughly 30 to 40 per cent of your guest count to be on the floor at peak, such as during the first dance or a popular song. Younger crowds and music-led events trend higher, while corporate dinners and mixed-age gatherings often sit lower. The calculator lets you set this share directly so you can size for your specific crowd rather than a one-size-fits-all number.

Modular event dance floors are usually built from interlocking parquet or vinyl panels, and a 1 x 1 m (one square metre) panel is a handy standard planning size, though real-world panels are often around 3 x 3 ft (about 0.9 x 0.9 m). Working in 1 m squares keeps the maths simple, because your panel count and your floor area in square metres come out roughly the same number. The finished floor is then laid out as a square or rectangle to suit the room, so round your panel count up to a shape that fits.

Even for a small group, a floor much under about 9 m² (a 3 x 3 m square) tends to feel cramped once a handful of couples are up. That is why the calculator never returns less than 9 m², treating it as a sensible floor for a small gathering. For larger events, scale up from your dancer count rather than down from the room size.

Either works, and the right choice depends on the room. The calculator suggests a square as a starting point because it packs the most usable space into the smallest footprint, but a rectangle often suits a long marquee or function room better and can sit neatly in front of the stage or band. Keep the floor clear of speaker stands and walkways, and leave space around the edge so the area doesn't feel boxed in.
