School performance evenings move fast. The AV setup has to keep up.

A choir item, then a dance group, then a soloist, then a band, then a drama scene. Each item has different sound and lighting requirements. Each transition has to be clean.

“Pricing has two parts. Operators at $90/hr, equipment from $300. You only pay for the gear your program needs.”

Performance evening types

Every kind of performance evening covered

From small drama showcases to combined school showcase evenings, we tailor the rig to suit.

🎪

Multi Act Showcase

The classic school performance evening. Drama, dance, choir, soloists, band items back to back. Two operators recommended for clean transitions between acts.

💃

Dance Showcase

Music playback driven evening with stage wash lighting and moving heads available. Single operator works well if the program is choreographed in advance.

🎵

Music Concert

School band, orchestra or choir concert. Multiple microphones across the stage, DI inputs for instruments, foldback for musicians available.

🎭

Drama Showcase

Wireless mics for cast, sound effects from playback, stage lighting cued to scenes. We work from your script and lighting plot if you have one.

🎉

Year 12 Revue

Multi item revue format with quick scene changes. Two operators highly recommended. We program scene presets in advance for fast, reliable transitions.

🏫

Combined Schools

Larger showcase evenings where multiple schools share a venue. Extra wireless mics, larger PA coverage, multiple choir mic positions available.

Why two operators matters

For multi act evenings, two operators changes everything

School performance evenings have constant transitions. A choir item ends, a dance starts. The choir mics fade out, the music playback comes up, the stage wash shifts colour, the dancers move into position. Every transition needs sound and lighting to change at the same time.

With one operator splitting attention between sound and lighting, the transitions feel rough. The lighting cue lands a second late. The mic for the next reader is opened too early. The music fades when the speaker is still talking. Small things, but the audience notices every one.

With two operators, one is fully focused on sound and the other on lighting. They both attend the rehearsal so they know your program. Every cue lands clean, every act starts at the right moment, every transition feels seamless.

For single discipline evenings (just a dance showcase, just a band concert), one operator is usually enough because the technical setup stays consistent throughout the program. The mics rarely change, the lighting holds steady, the playback runs predictably.

For multi act revue style evenings, two operators is worth the cost. The extra operator adds $360 over a 4 hour evening ($90 x 4 hours). For a school running an event their community will remember, the smoother delivery from two operators is worth every dollar of the extra spend.

Glossary

Performance evening terms explained

Common terms you will hear when planning a school performance evening, explained simply.

Multi act evening

A performance night made up of several short items in different disciplines (dance, choir, drama, band). Each item has its own sound and lighting requirements and the program flows from one to the next with quick transitions between.

Scene preset

A saved configuration of mixer or lighting desk settings for one act in the program. Recalled by the operator at the start of that act so the technical setup is correct without having to dial it in live.

Transition

The technical changeover between two acts in the program. Includes fading out the previous act, changing mics, switching lighting, starting playback. Clean transitions make a performance evening feel professional.

DI box

Direct injection box. Converts the signal from electronic instruments like keyboards, bass guitar and acoustic pickups so they can plug into the sound mixer cleanly. Essential for performance evenings with live band items.

Front of house

The PA system and mix position facing the audience. The operator sits at “front of house” and controls the overall sound the audience hears throughout the evening.

Foldback

Stage monitors facing the performers so they can hear themselves and the music clearly. Important for band items where musicians need to hear each other to stay in time.

Bump in

The setup phase before a show. Equipment is brought in, rigged, plugged in and tested. Counts towards your booked hours. Bump out is the reverse, packing everything down after the final act.

Soundcheck

The pre show test where microphone levels, monitor balance and playback are dialled in with the performers. For multi act evenings, soundcheck includes setting scene presets for each item in the program.

Common questions

Performance evening AV hire FAQ

Pricing has two parts. Operators are $90 per hour per operator with a 4 hour minimum. Equipment is quoted separately based on your specific program, starting around $300 for a basic rig. A typical single operator evening with basic equipment lands around $660 total. A larger multi act evening with two operators and a full rig (moving heads, choir mics, foldback, band DI) typically lands between $1,200 and $2,500 total.
One operator works fine for single discipline evenings with predictable transitions, like a dance showcase with a set playlist or a band concert with limited stage changes. Two operators are recommended for multi act performance evenings where sound and lighting cues change rapidly between items. When in doubt, two operators is worth the extra cost for the smoother delivery.
The minimum booking is 4 hours per operator. This covers setup, the performance itself and packdown. Most school performance evenings run 4 to 6 hours total when you factor in bump in and bump out. For longer evenings or shows requiring extensive setup, plan for 5 or 6 hours.
No. The $90 per hour rate is for operator labour only. Equipment is quoted separately based on what your program needs. A basic rig (PA, wireless microphones, stage wash, music playback) starts around $300. Larger rigs with moving heads, choir mics, foldback monitors or battery PA are priced accordingly. You only pay for the gear your program uses.
Equipment is quoted as a flat hire rate per item or per rig. A basic rig package starts around $300. Moving head lights are quoted per fixture, choir microphones per pair, battery PA as a flat hire fee, silent generators as a flat fee. Once you tell us what your program needs, we provide a full quote with the operator hours and the equipment hire clearly itemised.
Multi act evenings are our specialty. Fast changeovers between dance, choir, drama, band and solo items. Scene presets on the mixer and lighting desk are programmed in advance during rehearsal so transitions land cleanly without holding up the program. We strongly recommend two operators for multi act evenings.
Yes. We accept music tracks from USB, laptop or your school music device. Tracks should be labelled with the act order. Our operator manages playback throughout the evening, fading between tracks and timing them to match the program. Multiple input sources can be running simultaneously if needed.
Yes. Our team covers outdoor performance evenings including ovals, amphitheatres and undercover areas. Battery powered PA and silent generator hire are available for venues without easy mains power access. Weather contingency plans are part of every outdoor quote.
We recommend booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead for performance evenings. Term 3 and Term 4 are our busiest periods because schools cluster their performance nights in those terms. Friday and Saturday nights book first. The earlier you book, the more flexibility you have around dates and operator availability.
Yes. All Enchant Entertainment staff hold current Working With Children Checks. We provide documentation with every booking confirmation and can supply it to your front office before bump in day.
Operator overruns are charged at the standard $90 per hour per operator, billed in 30 minute increments. Equipment hire is a flat fee for the event so it does not change if you run long. We always check with you before billing extra operator time. If you think there is a chance your evening could run long, factor an extra hour into the original booking.
